Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of organizational culture on psychiatric social workers` organizational commitment. Study subjects consisted of 217 social workers working at 83 mental health service agencies, who were randomly selected across South Korea. The data were collected by self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using multi-level modeling. The major findings of the study were as follows: First, the dominant organizational culture was neither rational culture nor hierarchical, but group and developmental ones. Second, 37.5% of the total variance in the organizational commitment was explained by the organization-level variables (ICC=.379). Third, such variables as education, marital status, careers in mental health, seniority, empowerment for psychiatric social workers were significantly associated with the dependent variable. Finally, organizational commitment was, in terms of statistical significance, influenced by the developmental culture only at the agency level, and some interaction effects were shown between person- and organization-level variables. In the conclusion, the authors discussed the implications of the study outcomes, and offered some recommendations to enhance the organizational commitment of psychiatric social workers.
